FOSp

Definition

FOSp (Fermenteerbare organische stof pens) refers to the portion of Digestible Organic Matter (DOM) that is utilised in the rumen.

The difference between DOM and FOSp is digested in the intestines. The ratio between DOM and FOSp can be influenced by accelerating fermentation in the rumen. Sugar-rich feed ingredients, for example, ferment readily.

Role of FOSp in rumen fermentation

FOSp represents the fermentable part of organic matter that is available for fermentation in the rumen. This fraction plays an important role in the rumen fermentation process.

A higher proportion of fermentable organic matter supports rumen fermentation, while differences in feed composition influence how much organic matter is fermented in the rumen.

Influence of feed composition

The FOSp value depends on feed composition. Feeds that contain higher levels of sugars and soluble carbohydrates generally show a higher proportion of fermentable organic matter.

The balance between DOM and FOSp is therefore an important characteristic when evaluating feed quality and rumen fermentation.
